Sports Massage and Trigger Points

Sports Massage

Massage can be very beneficial in sport, through various specific techniques it can enhance the performance of the athlete. The enhancement of blood circulation leads to improved muscle tissue function, which can be used to help in the preparation for a contest or for a faster regeneration after an intense training session. In general an improvement of performance is achieved.

Trigger points

A trigger point is a painful spot in a muscle if there is pressure exerted and that is associated with a palpable nodule. Compression of a trigger point may elicit local tenderness, referred pain or local twitch response. Referred pain means that the local pain in one muscle can create pain in another area distant from it.

During a treatment there is isolated pressure exerted on the point in order to releasing constricted areas in the muscles that lowers the tensions in the muscles and therefore alleviation of the pain.

Dr. Janet Travell coined the term myofascial trigger point. She followed up for years on her work and became known by treating John F. Kennedy for his back pain.
